Hidden beneath a dilapidated porch, a litter of newborn kittens mewled pitifully. Only days old, their eyes still closed, the tiny felines crawled aimlessly over each other, searching in vain for the warmth and nourishment of their mother. But she would not return, having been struck by a car just the night before while hunting food for her young.
By some sad twist of fate, their mother was stolen away just as her maternal duties had scarcely begun.
