It was a cold, rainy night when the call came in to the local animal shelter. A stray dog had been spotted limping down the street, clearly in distress. Animal control officers quickly responded and found the poor dog soaking wet and shivering in a alleyway. She was extremely thin and clearly malnourished. But the most shocking part was that one of her hind legs was completely missing. It looked to have been chewed off by the dog herself in a desperate attempt to break free from some sort of restraint.
The officers gently loaded the terrified dog into their van and brought her to the shelter. The vet examined the stump where her leg had been and determined it had been gnawed off quite some time ago as it was already healed over. They speculated she must have been trapped or tied up somewhere and chewed through her own leg to escape. It was a tragic but astounding show of resilience and survival instinct.
At the shelter, the resilient dog was named Hope. Despite her trauma, Hope showed an incredible spirit and adjustability. She learned to walk and run comfortably on just three legs. Her sweet and affectionate personality won over staff and volunteers alike. When potential adopters came to meet her, they were all inspired by Hope’s life story and fortitude.
After a couple of months, Hope was adopted by a loving family who had experience caring for disabled dogs. They were amazed by everything Hope had survived and how she never lost her bright spirit. For Hope, her new life was a fairytale ending after the nightmare she had endured. She now has a cozy bed, nutritious meals, toys to play with, and a family to cuddle up next to while watching TV. Gone are the days of struggling to survive.
