The little puppy wandered the streets, lost and afraid. Just a few months old, she had been cruelly abandoned by the only family she ever knew. Confused and overwhelmed in the big city, she aimlessly searched for her owners, not understanding why they had left her.
Exhausted from walking all day and night with no food or water, her tiny body finally gave out. She collapsed helplessly on the sidewalk, too weak to stand. Passersby glanced down at her briefly before continuing on their way, indifference to her suffering.
As she laid there, her belly ached from hunger. Her mouth was parched, her eyes barely able to produce tears. She whimpered and cried out softly, desperately hoping someone would stop and help her. But her cries went unanswered.
In her young mind, she didn’t comprehend such indifference. She only knew love and compassion. As a member of a pack, she expected others to care for each other, not turn away.
Yet people continued to pass by, some annoyed by her cries, others too busy to notice. To them, she was just another stray, not worth their time or compassion. They didn’t see her as a baby in need of immediate help.
As the hours passed, her hope began to fade. She tried with her last bits of energy to crawl to shelter, but she was just too weak. Accepting her fate, she laid her head down and closed her eyes. Her labored breaths slowed as her small body began to shut down.
But just as she was about to let go, gentle hands scooped her up. A kind voice soothed her. Though near death, she had been found just in time by someone who cared enough to answer her cries. She was finally safe.
